Healthy School Meals Petition Letter

Dear Elected Representative,

As a member of your district, I am extremely concerned that unhealthy school meals are contributing to childhood obesity and related chronic diseases. More students across the country are seeking healthful vegetarian foods at school for a variety of reasons, but all students benefit from having these foods available.

National health organizations like the American Public Health Association,  the American Medical Association, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine as well as over a hundred hospitals across the country have called on the federal government to help schools provide nondairy, vegetarian options to children. A daily vegetarian option would encourage healthful eating patterns by reducing the amount of fat, calories, and cholesterol students get, and may cost less than the higher fat meat and dairy options.

The reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act and the Healthy School Meals Act of 2010 (H.R. 4870) presents a perfect opportunity to help school meal programs serve more healthful plant-based meals that include more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and healthful nondairy, vegetarian foods and beverages.

I urge Congress to invest in our children’s future through the Healthy School Meals Act of 2010 that will improve the health of America’s schoolchildren by raising the nutritional quality of food through the promotion of plant-based meals and healthful dairy alternative beverages in schools. Our children deserve healthy food and I believe this is a smart investment in the future of our country.  If we don't manage our children's health today, they'll be left to manage their disease tomorrow.  Please support H.R. 4870.

Thank you.
