HAF Condemns Attempted Bombing at Times Square
New York, NY (May 5, 2010) - The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) condemned the May 1st attempted bombing at Times Square by Faisal Shahzad.
"Manhattan, a shining symbol of democracy and capitalism at work, is a clear target for terrorists. And this latest attempt once again puts New Yorkers in the position of having to become suspicious of everything and everyone around us." said Sheetal Shah, HAF's New York City based Director of Development. "New York City law enforcement, acting on the reports of suspicious activity by two concerned New Yorkers, did so swiftly, strategically and successfully -- and for this it should be commended. But will we always be so lucky?"
Shah cited the Foundation's annual human rights report which has, for six consecutive years, highlighted the growing Islamic militancy in Pakistan and verified reports that U.S. aid is being diverted from the war on terror to fund terrorist insurgencies. In discussions with HAF last year, a number of Congressional offices noted the near impossibility of accounting for the manner in which U.S. aid is being used in Pakistan.
"It is disheartening when a U.S. citizen, like Shahzad, turns his back on his adopted country and finds not only inspiration, but training as well, from the Pakistani Taliban," Shah said further. "As a resident of New York City and a U.S. taxpayer, I'm outraged that my tax dollars are aiding Pakistan, a country that is fueling Islamic terrorism worldwide."
