WASHINGTON, D.C. (November
9, 2006) – The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) issued
its congratulations to the victors in this week’s midterm
elections. HAF welcomed the new leaders in the House and Senate,
as well as winners in gubernatorial elections across the nation.
HAF leaders said that they looked forward to engaging them
on the issues that HAF has promoted over the last four years
relevant to the Hindu American community: human rights, inter-faith
dialogue, and religious liberty.
“We look forward to our continued bipartisan
approach in interacting with our nation’s leaders as
we represent the over 2 million Hindu Americans in this country,”
said Ishani Chowdhury, Executive Director of HAF. “It
is of utmost importance to the community that issues such
as the nuclear deal with India and the promotion of religious
pluralism in our country move forward with renewed urgency.”
HAF called upon legislators also to look beyond Iraq in the
foreign policy sphere. As noted in the HAF
annual report on the human rights of Hindus globally,
massive rights violations continue in Afghanistan, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere, where Hindus, among
other minorities, are victimized. In particular, HAF urged
legislators to closely monitor events in Bangladesh ahead
of the January
2007 general elections, and the situation after the election
to insure that Bangladesh halts its descent towards a theocratic
Islamist state.
The Hindu American Foundation is a 501(c)(3),
non-profit, non-partisan organization promoting the Hindu
and American ideals of understanding, tolerance and pluralism.
