New York, NY (February 5, 2008). Leadership of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) met with Mr. Mason Smith, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations on January 30, 2008. This initial meeting allowed HAF to describe its objectives, successes, and future endeavors, as well as initiate an in-depth discussion of religious tolerance and pluralism.
"The Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations was pleased to meet with the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) and supports HAF's human rights work in promoting pluralism and tolerance amongst the world's religions," said Smith. HAF presented Smith with its 2006 human rights report entitled, "Hindus in South Asia and the Diaspora," and appreciated the decline in temple attacks in Fiji since December 2006. This year's report and upcoming Foundation projects were also discussed.
“This was a unique opportunity for HAF to further its dialogue with Fijian leaders and and highlight the Foundation’s global mission and human rights advocacy,” said Sheetal Shah, HAF’s Director of Development based in the Foundation's New York office. “Moreover this was another opportunity for HAF to find synergies with member nations of the United Nations.
