Workplace Religious Freedom Act of 2012 passes in CA State Assembly

Sacramento, CA (June 4, 2012) - HAF is pleased to announce the recent passage of California Assembly Bill 1964, the Workplace Religious Freedom Act of 2012, in the California State Assembly. HAF supported AB 1964, along with several other civil rights organizations and faith based advocacy groups, including the ACLU, Anti-Defamation League, American Jewish Committee, Agudath Israel of California, Japanese American Citizens League, California Employment Lawyers Association, California Immigrant Policy Center, California Nurses Association, Church State Council, Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the North American Religious Liberty Association.
 
The legislation was authored by California State Assembly Member Mariko Yamada (D – Davis) and sponsored by the Sikh Coalition. It seeks to further strengthen workplace protections for religious freedom and ensure equal employment opportunity for all Californians.
 
AB 1964 passed with strong bipartisan support and now moves on to the California State Senate, where it will be heard in committee before a full floor vote.
