Prime Minister Modi’s Historic Reelection an Opportunity to Advance India’s Tradition of Pluralism
Washington, DC (May 23, 2019) — After 600 million people cast their ballots, the largest exercise in democracy has been completed in India, with the incumbent government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi winning a landslide victory.
Representatives from the Foundation offered the following comments:
Suhag Shukla, Esq., HAF’s Executive Director:
"We’re optimistic that India’s government will continue to ensure inclusive growth, law and order, and stability in the region with further investment in education, good governance, infrastructure, and clean energy. And we hope that a Uniform Civil Code is prioritized and adopted so that Indians of all faiths and none can finally enjoy the promise of a secular democracy and equal protection under the law."
Samir Kalra, Esq., HAF’s Managing Director:
"We urge Prime Minister Modi to advance the country’s established tradition of pluralism and religious freedom by continuing to pursue reforms including retracting the Constitutional provision Article 370, empowering Jammu and Kashmir to become a fully integrated state of India. And for those Kashmiri Pandits who wish to return to their ancestral homeland in the Kashmir Valley, safe and viable repatriation needs to be prioritized. We also hope to see India continue to be a land of refuge for persecuted religious minorities from the broader region."
