Hindu Americans Celebrate Nomination of Garland to U.S. Supreme Court
Washington, D.C. (March 16, 2016) - Leaders of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) applauded President Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to serve as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
“While we hoped to see the first Hindu American on the Supreme Court, Judge Garland is a fantastic choice,” noted Suhag Shukla, Esq., HAF’s Executive Director and Legal Counsel. “Judge Garland’s even-handedness and his commitment to justice are readily apparent from his record.”
Judge Garland currently serves as the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (D.C. Circuit) and has served on the Court since 1997. Judge Srikanth (Sri) Srinivasan, one of Judge Garland’s colleagues on the bench and the first Hindu Court of Appeals judge in American history, was also a finalist for this position.
“We look forward to the eventual nomination of Judge Srinivasan to the Supreme Court,” Shukla added. “In the meantime, we hope the Senate will do its duty and confirm Judge Garland’s nomination.”
